Director of Software Engineering

at Recruit Digital in Cape Town

Fantastic opportunity for an experienced senior development manager/CTO with exceptional managerial and execution skills to lead a team of highly capable engineers with an exceptionally strong and highly respected leadership team at the helm. Prior experience leading a substantial team of development managers, their respective teams and the desire to continue the existing path of growth they're undergoing would be highly sought after attributes. 


You'd be required to perform the following functions:


  • Lead and grow the team of developers which cover the following areas;

    • Back-end (open source)

    • Front-end

    • Mobile applications

    • Hardware system engineering

    • Business intelligence

  • This person has thrived and succeeded in delivering high quality solutions in a hyper growth environment where priorities shift fast.

  • The position demands excellent technical skills and knowledge coupled with strong leadership, planning, and management abilities.

  • Knowledge and experience with one or more development methodologies, and experience developing engineering process is required.





  • Customer and people focused mindset.

  • Desire to build, sense of ownership, urgency and drive.

  • 5-10 years experience in software development and 5+ years as a development manager.

  • BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent

  • Thorough knowledge of what it takes to develop scalable, extensible technology, as well as how to structure and develop organizations.

  • Proven results oriented person with a delivery focus and demonstrated ability to achieve targets in a highly innovative and fast paced environment.

  • Ability to work well with people and be both highly motivated and motivating.

  • Experience with Open source languages, MySQL, Linux/Unix, Perl, XML, C/C++ and Web services, and UNIX tools.

  • Strong analytical skills with excellent problem solving abilities.

  • Strong presentation and leadership skills

  • Strong technical vision.

  • Hires and develops great people

  • Relentlessly high standards

  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Previous demonstrated project management success on similar projects emphasis placed on experience with high-volume web-based applications.
