Social Media Specialist

Social Media Specialist needed for popular South African Retailer.

Calling all Social media fundi's! One of South Africa's leading retailers is looking for a social media specialist to complete their team! Should this position become yours, you will be responsible for day-to-day management and growth of my Client's social media presence and increased brand engagement, in alignment with business strategies by actively engaging customers and social media users. The specialist will manage all social media posts and content amongst the various social media platforms’ twitter, Facebook, You tube, LinkedIn Instagram etc

Social Media Content Management and paid media:

  • Drive the development of social media business, content and paid media strategies.
  • Working with the creative team to define the voice and personality of The Client on Social
  • Planning all social media content and maintaining the content calendar going forward
  • Ensure the social media content is regular, relevant and engaging - Schedules to be completed approximately 1 week prior to live posts or on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Ensure the content posted aims to focus on the target market.
  • Ensure that the content is relevant and appropriate for each medium.
  • Manage the team who is responsible for Community management
  • Strategize or plan the posts wording/content including pictures or videos etc., time of posting, platforms for posting
  • Liaising relevant stakeholders (departments, brand & stores)
  • Contribute to strategy and planning meetings when appropriate.
  • Work with marketing teams and other departments regarding their needs for social media postings.
  • Ensure the correct information has been obtained from relevant departments regarding promotions or campaigns that are relevant to that department.
  • Ensure that the posts meet the needs of the promotion/ campaign as per the departments requests.
  • Ensure that the manager has approved all posts prior to posting.


  • Reporting on social media mentions or responses of the brand initiatives to marketing teams or relevant departments for continuous improvement and development of future strategies.
  • Report on positive and negative sentiments and monitor such levels.
  • Report on potential brand attacks.
  • Prepare regular summary reporting for senior management.

The Client's Social Media Presence

  • Research new and trending social media channels and their impacts.
  • Ensure Makro's presence on social media channels that are appropriate and have large impact.
  • Aim to grow Makro's social media followers by posting about promotions or engaging information that would attract the target market/customers.
  • Aim to grow The Client's customer base and sales through social media.
  • Utilization of Meltwater tracking system daily to track brand mentions and potential brand attacks.

Community, fan, followers management and questions

  • Manage the team who is responsible for day to day page and community management, including fan engagement, posting strategy implementation, moderation and uploading content.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of community management strategies through social media.
  • Ensure timeous replies to posts or questions regarding posts or any information regarding Makro, its stores, promotions, campaign etc.
  • Ensure that the questions have been answered correctly by verifying all answers to questions from the relevant Department Manager or SME.
  • All negative or potentially damaging queries need to be escalated within 2 hours if they have been posted between 8am and 4pm.
  • Monitor customer sentiments and aim to increase positive sentiments and convert negative sentiments.
  • All negative or potentially damaging queries need to be escalated by 9am the next morning if they gave been posted after 4pm the previous day.


  • Draw up posting schedules to be approved by senior manager.
  • Assist with other digital marketing tasks and special projects that may arise


Matric/Grade 12

Tertiary education in marketing/related field.

2-3 years experience as a social media specialist.

Proficient in Afrikaans, Zulu & Sotho advantageous
